Vitamin B12 Deficiency Symptoms

Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms can be very similar to many other ailments; hence the need to monitor them closely and listen to what your body is telling you. This is a great life altering surgery for many people to lose weight and live a longer life. However, because the stomach is much smaller after this surgery it is unable to produce enough acid and proteins needed to help the body absorb the B12. The acids break the B12 away from the animal proteins of the foods (dairy, eggs, red meat, chicken, fish, etc.). The "intrinsic factor" protein created in the stomach then combines with the B12 to assist in the absorption process in the intestines. In this case, the intestines are fine, but the stomach fails to prep the B12.

The skin also shows the vitamin b12 deficiency symptoms. There is paleness on the skin and eyes, dryness of lips and similar symptoms, all attributing to low blood count. In simple words we may say that blood is the carrier of food and oxygen to all the parts of the body. If blood get affected (low red blood cells, in this case) it is bound to affect the entire body and the functions of all the organs. The sever the deficiency gets, more severe the consequences. Though in the initial stage it might be not very significant.

Vitamin b12 is essential for blood formation and tissue growth. There are many symptoms of deficiency in the brain and stomach that are often mistaken for aging. These symptoms include loss of appetite, balance issues, bloating, constipation, delusions, depression, diarrhea, fatigue, headaches, heartburn, impulse control, mental confusion, nausea, numbness or tingling in the hand or feet, paleness, paranoia, soreness in the mouth or tongue, vomiting and weight loss. Vegans and vegetarians are at higher risk for b12 deficiencies due to lack of b12 occurring naturally in their diets.

It is really important to be aware of symptoms that may be caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency sooner than later. Since the effects can be cumulative, it is easy to just chalk them up to aging when they are only mild to moderate. There are many vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms, but some of the more common ones include fatigue, trouble thinking clearly, bleeding gums, moodiness, nervousness, lightheadedness, and constipation. More serious long term symptoms can include heart disease, stroke, and dementia such as Alzheimer's disease.

Vegan people are the ones who are more at risk of having a B12 deficiency. That's why it is needed that they get vitamin supplements to balance any lack. If you are a vegan woman and you are breast-feeding your child, you also elevate the risk for him/her. Luckily vitamin B12 are safe and can be used to supplement both vegan people and pregnant/lactating women.

Deficiency can be a major issue with B12. The symptoms are extremely common, and can be misdiagnosed quite easily. It also affects the nervous system, numbness and tingling can happen quite a lot typically this is very minimal and is not a considered a symptom. However, hands and feet tend to be the first affected by this, similar to sitting on your hands for a long period of time. If you believe you have B12 deficiency look for other symptoms. Dizziness, loss of appetite, is the most common symptom besides tingling. However the final symptom is can be white spots on the skin.
